Instant Gallery

 Vendor Floor

6/28/03
Well then. It is about 1am Saturday morning. Been a very long day to say the least. Facilities (at least the vendor area and Instant Gallery) are very nice. Big place. But as usual, expensive. Coffee was $3 a cup.

Where to start. Since we drove out here from Dallas, it is all kind of a blur. Setup Thursday, start Friday. Talked with Art Liestman at length, great guy and humbled by all the attention (he and) his work has been getting. I say, well deserved. Because of Gary Sander, I met Ray Leirer (spelling?) from Del Mano. Great guy, very hospitable (whole 'nother story).
Not a whole lot of innovations and new gadgets this year.

Alan lacer has a new video on general woodturning, and if it is anything like the skew turning video, it should have a place in EVERY clubs library.

John Jordan has a new set of hook tools to go in the Stewart system. Consists of a straight bar that will take an inset tool bit, and two lengths of curved (hooked) holders. Very much like the Dennis Stewart ones, but I think that he has done a god job of lining up the tip with the center line for better controllability and less jerkiness. Trent Bosch has a pneumatic carving stand. Looks like a tool post with a ball and socket. I will have to get more info on that.

In the vendor area, i would say it is as big as ever.
Last year there seemed to be a theme with the wood, and it was Thuya and Afzalia burl. No real pattern to this year but a good mix. Logsol guy has some great local (SoCal) woods. Avocado, Orange, Oaks and local Eucalyptus. I bought the Ash log right off his display. The burls are flowing and right priced as always. Mardena the burl lady just had a child (two weeks?) and friends stepped in to sell her Maple Burl. A small load of spikey edged, but still plenty left.

The Instant Gallery will continue to amaze! An wait until you see the collaborative projects this year. I have my favorite, lets see what wins though (tomorrow night).

I took a bunch of pics, but am cleaning them up and will post as I get them cropped.

6/29/03 - 11:45PM Well, another day, more tools. Anyway-
The banquet went good, was held outdoors and we had good weather. Usual food, but everyone moved indoors into an auditorium for the auction. Weird place to have it, but it worked, raised $33,190 for the education fund. Bonnie Klein received her well deserved lifetime achievement award and becomes permanent member #13.
Collaborative awards were named. (I was surprised so few were entered.) I will be posting more pictures as I can. I took about 50 instant gallery pictures and I need some demonstrator pictures. We will be driving back on Monday morning, so no more postings until next week when i wrap it up. Thanks to all.

7/2/03 - I have gotten a chance to post the IG pictures. There are three pages of them, but still without restrictions. Thanks to Andi Wolfe for the Woodturning in Africa exhibit. Alot of great turnings.
